Toma Nikolaev Mladenov is a long-time public figure, media expert, and active advocate for the rights of the Roma community in Bulgaria and Europe. With over three decades of experience in the civil sector, he is the initiator and leader of numerous national and international initiatives in the fields of education, social integration, labor employment, and the prevention of discrimination.
Over the years, he has held leadership positions in public and non-governmental organizations both in Bulgaria and in the United Kingdom, including as the chairman of "Roma London," co-chairman of "Roma Council Group – London," and director of the Roma Information Agency "Defacto." He has collaborated with international institutions, universities, media, and human rights organizations such as BBC, Reuters, Amnesty International, and others.
Mr. Mladenov has made significant contributions to the institutional development of Roma civil society, including participation in the establishment of the National Council on Ethnic and Demographic Issues under the Council of Ministers in 1997. He is the initiator of numerous social and educational projects of national and international significance.
Since 2026, he has been the chairman of the newly established organization "United Civic Initiatives – Romengo" and has been chosen by the global Roma diaspora to organize the 15th World Roma Congress in Sofia.
He speaks Bulgarian and Romani fluently, as well as English, German, Russian, Romanian, Turkish, and Esperanto at various levels.
